Partial
Objectives
To design a garment using unconventional materials and innovative surface texture to create a physical portrayal of internal self-identity. The final design was presented in the Weisman Art Museum Imprints fashion show.
Designer Statement
Partial explores the designer's experience of growing up and figuring out who she truly is, while trying to keep with the status quo. This is represented through her use of garbage bags, whose main role is to hide objects that people do not want to see. Escaping to the city has allowed her to express her own beliefs and opinions as an independent being. When the outer layer is removed, the model is allowed to break free from her unauthorized constraints and reveal her true colors underneath. The red and orange cellophane represents the designer’s personality traits as well as her hopes and dreams for the future.
Process
• Lawn and Leaf Bags
When heat pressed between parchment paper, the plastic bags melted to create a pleather-like textile. Multiple strips were cut and sewn together in layers to form the detachable upper skirt. To construct the bodice, a dress form was covered in parchment paper and the plastic was melted to the form.
• Cellophane
Colorful cellophane was used to decorate the main skirt, and represent the designer's true personality once the black covering was removed on the runway. The cellophane was cut into circles, layered, and fused together to form flowers–then hand-stitched onto the dress. Excess cellophane was heat fused together to form a large textile that can be seen stitched to the entirety of the skirt to reduce construction waste.
